Trade-In Your Watch: How Upgrading Works at WE

Trade-In Your Watch: How Upgrading Works at WE

Why Trade-In Beats Selling and Buying Separately

Many watch enthusiasts reach a point where they are ready for the next level. Maybe your Tudor Black Bay has served you brilliantly and now you are eyeing a Rolex Submariner. Or perhaps your Omega Seamaster has you thinking about an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. The question is not whether to upgrade but how to do it efficiently.

Trading in your current watch toward your next purchase is almost always a better experience than selling on one platform and buying on another. Here is why, and exactly how it works at Watches Established.

The Advantages of Trading In

One Transaction Instead of Two

When you sell and buy separately, you are managing two independent transactions with different timelines, different parties, and different risks. A trade-in collapses everything into a single interaction. You walk in (or ship) with one watch and leave with another, paying only the difference.

Better Value on Both Sides

Here is something most people do not realize: dealers can often offer more favourable terms on a trade-in than on a standalone purchase or sale. When we acquire your watch and sell you another in a single transaction, our costs are lower. We pass that efficiency on to you in the form of a stronger trade-in credit or a better price on the watch you are buying.

No Gap Period

If you sell your watch first and then shop for your next one, you could be without a watch for weeks or months. With a trade-in, the transition is immediate. You are never left wearing a bare wrist while waiting for a deal to close.

Simplified Finances

Instead of receiving a payout, depositing it, and then making a separate purchase, you simply pay the difference between your trade-in value and the price of the new watch. It is cleaner from both a financial and a record-keeping perspective.

How Trade-In Works at Watches Established

Step 1: Tell Us What You Have and What You Want

Start by visiting our Sell Your Watch page and submitting details about your current watch. In the notes, mention that you are interested in a trade-in and, if you have a specific watch in mind, let us know. You can also browse our current inventory to see what is available.

Step 2: We Provide a Trade-In Quote

We evaluate your watch the same way we would for a direct purchase, using current market data and comparable sales. Then we pair that value against the watch you are interested in purchasing and present you with a clear trade-in quote showing:

  • The trade-in credit for your current watch
  • The price of the watch you want
  • The net amount you owe (or, in some cases, the credit coming back to you)

Step 3: Complete the Exchange

Once you agree to the trade-in terms, we arrange the exchange. For local sellers in Toronto, Montreal, or Vancouver, this can happen in person. For others across Canada, we coordinate shipping for both watches with full insurance coverage.

You pay the difference, receive your new watch, and the upgrade is complete.

Popular Upgrade Paths

Based on the trade-ins we process at WE, these are some of the most common upgrade paths Canadian collectors follow:

Tudor to Rolex

This is the most popular upgrade we see. Tudor owners who have enjoyed the Black Bay or Pelagos often move up to a Rolex Submariner, Explorer, or GMT-Master II. The Tudor typically covers 30% to 50% of the Rolex's price, depending on the specific models involved.

Omega to Rolex

Omega Speedmaster and Seamaster owners frequently trade up to Rolex sports models. An Omega Speedmaster Professional in good condition with box and papers can cover a meaningful portion of a Rolex Submariner or Explorer II.

Rolex to Audemars Piguet or Patek Philippe

For collectors ready to enter the world of haute horlogerie, trading a Rolex Submariner or Daytona toward an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak or a Patek Philippe Aquanaut is a natural progression. A Rolex Daytona, for example, can cover a significant portion of a Royal Oak's price.

Lateral Moves

Not every trade-in is an upgrade in price. Sometimes collectors want variety. We regularly help clients trade a Rolex Datejust for a Rolex Explorer, or an Omega Seamaster 300M for a Speedmaster. If your tastes have evolved, a trade-in lets you make the switch without the hassle of separate transactions.

What About the Value Calculation?

We know the natural concern: will the trade-in value for my watch be lower than what I would get selling it outright? At Watches Established, we keep trade-in values competitive with our direct purchase offers. We are not using the trade-in as an excuse to undervalue your piece. You are welcome to compare our trade-in credit to standalone offers from other dealers.

The math is straightforward, and we show all the numbers transparently so there are no surprises.

Start Your Upgrade

If you have been thinking about upgrading your watch, trading in is the smartest way to do it. Head to our Sell Your Watch page to submit your current watch and tell us what you are looking for. Allan and the WE team will put together a complete trade-in proposal so you can see exactly what the upgrade looks like, with no pressure and no obligation.
