Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch: History, References, and Buying Tips

The Only Watch Qualified for Every Manned NASA Mission

The Omega Speedmaster's credentials are not marketing. They are historical fact. In 1965, NASA subjected chronographs from several manufacturers to a punishing battery of tests: extreme temperatures, humidity, vacuum, shock, vibration, and acceleration. Only the Omega Speedmaster survived every test. It was officially qualified for all manned space missions, a distinction it holds to this day.

On July 20, 1969, Buzz Aldrin wore his Speedmaster on the surface of the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission. Neil Armstrong's Speedmaster remained inside the Lunar Module as a backup timing instrument. The Speedmaster became, literally, the Moonwatch, and no amount of time can diminish that distinction.

Origins: The CK2915 and Early References

The Speedmaster was not designed for space. Introduced in 1957 as the ref. CK2915, it was a racing chronograph with a tachymeter bezel. The calibre 321, a column-wheel chronograph movement of exceptional quality, powered the early references. The CK2915, with its broad arrow hands and straight lugs, is one of the most valuable Omega references on the vintage market.

The ref. 105.003, worn by astronaut Ed White during the first American spacewalk in 1965, is known as the "Ed White" Speedmaster. The ref. 105.012 and 145.012, which were the specific references worn during the Apollo 11 mission, are the "Moonwatch" references in the strictest sense. These pre-Moon references are highly collectible and command significant premiums.

The Calibre 321: A Legend Returns

The original calibre 321 is revered by collectors and watchmakers alike. Its column-wheel chronograph mechanism is beautifully finished and mechanically excellent. Omega replaced it with the calibre 861 (a cam-actuated movement) in 1968, and the 321 became a vintage-only proposition.

In 2019, Omega reintroduced the calibre 321 in a faithful recreation, based on detailed scans of an actual Speedmaster worn on the Moon. The reissued 321 is available in the ref. 311.30.40.30.01.001 (steel) and precious metal variants. It is hand-wound, column-wheel actuated, and beautifully finished. For collectors who want the original Moonwatch movement in a modern case, it is the definitive choice.

Hesalite vs Sapphire: The Collector's Debate

The Speedmaster Professional is offered with two crystal options, and the choice defines two distinct philosophies:

Hesalite (Acrylic)

The Hesalite crystal is historically correct. It is what the astronauts wore. Hesalite has a warm, slightly distorting quality that gives the dial a vintage character. It scratches easily but can be polished with Polywatch or similar compounds. Most Speedmaster purists prefer Hesalite because it maintains the watch's original aesthetic and its connection to the space programme.

Sapphire

The sapphire crystal version features a scratch-resistant sapphire on the front and a sapphire display caseback revealing the movement. It is the practical choice: harder, more resistant to daily wear, and visually crisper. But the display caseback adds thickness, and the sapphire crystal has a different light reflection pattern that some collectors find less characterful than Hesalite.

For most Canadian collectors buying their first Speedmaster, the Hesalite version is the recommendation. It is the authentic Moonwatch experience, it costs slightly less, and it wears thinner on the wrist.

The Current Generation: Calibre 3861

In 2021, Omega released the ref. 310.30.42.50.01.001, updating the Speedmaster Professional with the calibre 3861. This co-axial Master Chronometer movement offers improved accuracy, a 50-hour power reserve, and resistance to magnetic fields up to 15,000 gauss. The case was subtly refined with a step dial, dot-over-90 bezel markings, and updated bracelet with refined end links.

The 3861-powered Moonwatch is the most technically accomplished Speedmaster ever produced. It maintains the 42mm case diameter, the hand-wound operation, and the fundamental design language that has defined the Speedmaster since the 1960s. Omega made changes, but they were careful not to lose the watch's soul.

Moonwatch vs Racing Speedmaster

The Speedmaster line has expanded well beyond the Professional Moonwatch. The Speedmaster Racing features a coaxial automatic movement, a date display, and a more contemporary design. The Speedmaster '57 reinterprets the original CK2915 aesthetic. Various limited editions explore colours, materials, and complications.

But the Professional Moonwatch remains the core of the line. It is the reference against which all other Speedmasters are judged, and it is the one that carries the full weight of the space programme heritage. For a first Speedmaster, the Professional is almost always the right choice.

Buying Tips for Canadian Collectors

  • Verify the reference: "Speedmaster" covers many watches. Ensure you are buying the specific reference you want. The Professional Moonwatch (hand-wound, no date) is a different watch from the Speedmaster Racing or Speedmaster Automatic.
  • Check the crystal: Confirm whether the watch has Hesalite or sapphire and whether that matches the original specification for the reference.
  • Service intervals: Omega recommends servicing every 5-8 years. A recently serviced Speedmaster with documentation is worth a premium.
  • Box and accessories: The current Speedmaster ships with the NATO strap, strap-changing tool, and a loupe in a moonwatch-themed box. A complete set commands a modest premium.
  • Bracelet condition: The Speedmaster bracelet can show desk-diving wear. Inspect for deep scratches on the clasp and excessive play in the links.
